Early Fall Colors

I was hoping to catch fall already in full swing on my visit to the East Coast but I guess I was a little early. I did manage to see some gorgeous autumnal colors at the beach. They were incredibly vibrant and it made me long for a fall full of red, yellow, and orange leaves spilling on to the sidewalks and lighting up the trees. Hopefully I will be able to catch those next year. I better start planing now!

I had the good fortune of photographing the 40th Anniversary Gala of Chez Panisse this past Friday for the Berkeleyside. It was absolutely beautiful and spirits where high as everyone celebrated the event! You can read more about it here and I'll have a few more photos to follow tomorrow!

I don't think this photographer needs an introduction but here is one anyway. I feel so lucky that I had the opportunity to meet one of my favorite photographers this week, Todd Selby! His work and portraits are a continuous inspiration to me and after meeting him and seeing what a nice down to earth person he was I understood why his portraits and subjects are so relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera. I have been tuned into his website anxiously awaiting every new post and keep his book close by for inspiration. This was definitely a highlight for me! I will be posting more photos from this event soon but for now you can see some of the photos I took here.

I've come down with a little bit of a cold...the weather is so beautiful all I want to do is be outside to enjoy it. Unfortunately my body thinks differently.... at least it has given me some time to work on some projects I have been wanting to work on inside and we did get to finish seeing the Stein Collection exhibit early this morning (we had to see it in two parts!). Foreign Cinema

Welcome to Foreign Cinema! We had brunch at this beautiful spot last weekend and I'm all ready for round two. I had been to their bar, Laszlo, a few times before and always had such a great time so I was excited to finally check out the restaurant. Walk down a red carpet and you are transported to a beautiful industrial space with just the right amount of warm accents. They change their menu on a daily basis with the exception of a few items. Everything we had was delicious, from their strawberry basil "pop tart" to the delicious french toast with strawberry lime butter. Our drinks were delicious and the service and presentation was perfect. Next up, dinner?

As we walked higher and higher in to the hills the fog got thicker and thicker and and the trees were magical as night and fog fell upon them. They reminded me of underwater sealife.

Evening-Part 2

These are all shots from the other evening when we came across the empty playground. As we made our way through the Berkeley Hills we were so surprised to come across these huge rock gardens all over the place, they were spectacular and grand. We then entered a park that resembled an ewok village with lots of little paths high above a ravine and spotted a beautiful amphitheater down below. We walked down quiet winding roads with beautiful old homes that made us feel like we were walking down a european back road. Towards the end we came across this path were someone had stapled all these beautiful poems to a fence. Some were incredibly sad, some very beautiful. Here is an excerpt from A Color of the Sky by poet Tony Hoagland:

"Last summer's song is making a comeback on the radio,
and on the highway overpass,
the only metaphysical vandal in America has written
MEMORY LOVES TIME
in big black spray paint letters,
which makes us wonder if Time loves Memory back."

PS- For all the locals out there did you feel that earthquake last night!? Pretty powerful, it felt like our whole house was jolted!

Yesterday I stopped by Flora Grubb to get some garden inspiration and I was transported to a magical place. I had not been here in over three years and the nursery has blossomed even more in to such a special place. I didn't want to leave. At every turn and corner there is an unexpected surprise and beautiful, beautiful displays of plants. I truly think these are the happiest plants I have seen at a nursery. It's almost sad to buy them and take them away because they look so beautiful in their environment. All the people that I came across while slowly making my way through the garden gave me a lot of information and useful tips for taking care of plants. I know there are a lot of pictures but hey, why not? I can't wait to stop in again, this time it won't be three years in between! Happy Fourth of July weekend.

Before and (Almost) After

You might remember this project from a long long time ago but if not you can see where we started here. For the past two!! years we have been saving this with the intention of finishing it. We had applied paint stripper a while back and this weekend Michael finished scraping the rest of the paint off and we primed the wood with an indoor/outdoor primer. I was inspired by one of my favorite necklaces (top photo) that broke a while back (another project for another day!). I have always loved the colors and simplicity of it. We had a ton of leftover paint samples and so we decided to put them to good use. Considering this is for our backyard we thought it would be fun to do something a little more colorful and fun. We still have to build the back part and get some pillows and it will be good to go! I'll be sure to post photos when the project is complete but for now I thought some colors would help to brighten up our rainy day here in Northern California.

Now that I have successfully kept alive two large plants for over 2 years I thought it was safe to add a new one to the family! I love the beautiful colors of the leaves. Plus, a gorgeous huge chunk of Mica that I found while hiking many years ago in New Mexico. (The colors are very warm in these pictures due to the time of day).

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to spend an afternoon with Tracey in her beautiful garden! Her and her partner in crime, Jim have created a magical space in their backyard and are truly the definition of urban farmers. Tracey, assisted by cute little Parker, gave me a tour through their garden and I discovered many surprises at every turn. On top of being the most gracious host and making one of the best tasting pizzas I have ever had with ingredients straight from her garden she has also agreed to a little mini interview (a first for my blog)!

How long have you been gardening for and do you have any advice for urban gardens?
12 years. From a porch in Boston with Astro Turf and plastic flamingos to L.A. container boot camp (it's a desert!) to a lovely yard in the east bay! Don't be shy, you can fit a lot of plants in small spaces!

Which three words best describe how you feel when you are in your garden or gardening?

Contemplative, relaxed and hungry!

What is your favorite thing about your garden?

The sense of fulfillment on all levels.

How many different varieties of fruits/vegetables are you growing (roughly, I know you have a lot!)?

Vintage Photos

Anyone that knows me knows how obsessed I am with animals, dogs in particular, but I really love them all. One of my favorite things to find when out and about are old photos of dogs. To find pictures where families have included their beloved animals tells me how dear they were to them. I have found some photos over time and some have been given to me by friends. When I saw this beautiful book dedicated to old dog photos I knew I had to bring it home and was happy to find a kindred spirit. All the images in the book were collected by Catherine Johnson. She works in the photography field and has been collecting images since she was a little girl. I love what she writes in the book stating having pets today is part of our need and desire to stay connected to the purity of the natural world and that these frozen moments in time make the dogs, the people and the photographs endearing and magical. I couldn't agree more.

PS. Doesn't that cute dog in photo #8, bottom left hand corner remind you of a certain "someone"?

Outerlands for Brunch

The Outerlands is one of my top favorite spots for brunch. I love the whole experience from driving out to the Sunset to the look and feel of the place itself. It is filled with warm wood accents and delicious smells from the kitchen. It is the perfect cozy spot to step in to after waiting outside in the cool foggy weather or on a warmer day sitting outside on the sunny sidewalk. My absolute favorite item is the french toast which is infused with orange and made from the bread that is made in their own kitchen. Delish!!!

Sketchbook Project

My sister has been asking me about the results of my sketchbook project so I thought I would share a little bit of that here today. I had some difficulty with the sketchbook as I took on the project. The paper of the moleskines is so incredibly thin that it was not suited to the vision I had for the project. I struggled to keep the images from seeping in to one another and as a final result had to do a lot of pencil drawings and a lot less watercolor and gouache. Keep in mind this is definitely a "sketch" book and not completed pieces of work. I hope you enjoy some of these images from my book!

I sure am glad the weekend is here. I am hoping to get some projects completed, see a movie, get some fresh air, take some photos, put some quarters in a jukebox, and have brunch (one of my favorite weekend activities) among other things. Hopefully we can make it out to one of my favorite places! These pictures are from Flora. We finally got a chance to go to their brunch a couple of weekends ago. I loved the beautiful art deco building and the crisp white linens, beautiful silver serving sets, and fresh delicious food! Fancy!

A Fleeting Moment

When I took Sadie out for a very quick pit stop I looked down and saw this beautiful little petal in the grass. I took some pictures right away but had no idea how quickly it would change. A few hours later the color was quickly fading and becoming one solid pale golden color. I'm so happy I took the pictures when I did or I would have missed the magic!

I happened upon this beautiful old building while exploring this weekend. It was hard to tell whether or not it was abandoned. I found a few broken windows, and strangely there were also some lights on inside. There was not a soul around nor any cars in sight. Honestly I was a little creeped out hanging out for as long as I did but I just loved the beautiful patina, the textures and colors of the building and the rust, and the lines of the architecture.

We've been doing a little spring cleaning and rearranging around the house this weekend. I was sad to part with my beloved copper shoes but they have definitely seen better days. I found those two new paintings at Urban Ore, $4 each!! The artist was a Bay Area artist who passed away a couple of years ago. I could not find out too much information on her but I thought it was so cool that her name was Maria Christina La Paz which coincidentally are my names and the city of my birth combined! A little matcha latte and some ginger chews are my latest favorites and helped make the day even better!

We went on an outing. I spotted a mermaid hiding in the woods and went in for a closer look. Then spotted this gorgeous lichen, waded through a stream, found a boat, some horses, and some beautiful bright flowering trees all while wearing orange sunglasses!

The many faces of Sadie! Today is Sadie's "golden" birthday, 14 on the 14th. She is my sweet little valentine and I can't imagine my life without her. I feel so lucky to have had her by my side all these years, words can't even describe. She is the most loyal friend, an old soul, and she is full of unconditional love. As she gets older she acts more like a puppy than ever before. She dances for her food and even jumps off the front porch landing to the walkway! Happy Birthday Spoon and to many more!!

I loved seeing all the cute little animals hanging out in the shops in paris and amsterdam! I know the last picture is not that great but I just couldn't leave that cute little guy out he was just looking at me so sweetly and posed like that for 3 or 4 shots! The shop photos are a little blurry but these kitties were so sweet and friendly whenever I would try to take a photo they move to come say hello! And the title of the post? Michael's cleverness....

Flea Market Loot!

Well, the sketchbook deadline has been extended until Tuesday so I have spent a marathon day today (over 12 hours!) working on it. I'm still not quite sure I'm going to be able to finish it up but I am in serious need of a break. I thought I would share a few recent flea market finds with you! Sketchbook Project

I probably won't be putting any new posts until next weekend. You see I signed up for the Sketchbook Project. When, you ask? Oh let's see... in October!! I have been putting it off as I have been having the hardest time actually starting. My theme is: down your street. I have given this a lot of thought and come up with many ideas but none that i was incredibly pleased with. Well, now has come the time to put idea to paper, crunch time. I have until Saturday, Jan. 15th to fill up all forty pages. Yep, that's six days. So, as you can guess every spare minute I have I will be working on this. If it starts to come along okay I might post some pictures of my progress. I'll definitely give a peak when I'm done and the whole book will be digitized for online viewing as part of the project so i'll pass along that information too. So, until Saturday. Wish me luck. I need it.

Weekend Exploring

I am so excited that I finally got to make it out to General Store! The store was laid out beautifully and had a warm and inviting feel to it. They had many beautiful items selected to drool over but I was smitten with all the cool lamps they had. I even got to say hello to a cute doggie that was quietly going to and fro in the shop. She reminded me so much of Sadie!! After I left the shop I came across a cute little coffee shop right next door. I was lured in by the look of the place and soon I found myself sipping a coffee and trying to keep myself from buying one of their delicious cookies, which they told me they serve with a shot of milk! The rest of the photos I took while wandering around Golden Gate Park.

New Year's Day Fun

Yesterday afternoon we took Sadie on a walk in San Francisco. It was cold, windy, and rainy but also incredibly beautiful. With a fresh rain everything was incredibly vibrant and green. We came across this cool installation in the Presidio created for the American Robin by Philippe Becker Design. The phrases describe robin behavior and the letters are filled with straw which provides nesting material for the robins. The creaking of the tall trees above and the birds singing happily all around created a very magical environment.

It was much to my great surprise that we happened upon this moment when we were making our way across the city. It was Paris Fashion week and the Chloe show had just finished.... I was really excited to get some pictures of some of my favorite fashion bloggers as they were doing their thing in the Jardin de Tuileries.

I couldn't sleep, I went to the window and the city was slowly waking. Trucks were making their deliveries, cafes turned their lights on and prepared for the day, schoolchildren made their way down the sidewalks. The quiet, dark, and still morning where you could hear the history of the buildings and streets quietly whispering was quickly turning into a bustling day.

the trip was very magical with many special moments. i have so many pictures to share, but this may be one of my favorites, the beautiful denni from chicmuse. i will be posting many more soon once i have organized myself. for now it is some laundry and fighting a very bad cold i picked up on my last day there...a bientôt!

I sure am having a hard time keeping up here! We had a surprise visit from my sister over the weekend and tomorrow morning we are off on an adventure to the City of Lights!!! I can hardly wait! I will surely be updating when I return if not sooner!!! For now I am off to slumber and dream of adventures to come....
